Which houses are targeted?
In a road or street, a burglar will usually choose the house without any visible signs of security, such as security lighting or alarm bell boxes, over those with such devices.

Houses are more than twice as likely to be burgled if they’ve been burgled in the previous four years.

Most burglaries are not pre-planned, they’re committed by opportunist thieves who spot an open door, window, or valuables on display.

In 10% of all break ins violence is used. This means for example in the UK someone is attacked in their own home every 30 minutes!

Burglars want an easy, risk free life, and do not want to get caught. They avoid getting caught by taking great care to select the right home to break into. A pile of mail gathering behind the glass of the front door, a cluster of milk bottles on the doorstep, or a newspaper sticking out of the letterbox, are some of the signs they look for. Couple these with an overgrown garden, curtains that never close, and rooms in perpetual darkness and you might as well invite them to break in.
